Our Journey

Our Story

From a support group of ten gay men living with HIV to a registered Community Based Organization this is the story of MOPLS.

How It All Began

12

Founded August 2012

Men For Positive Living Support (MOPLS) was founded by a group of gay, bisexual men (GBMSM) in Kisumu County living with HIV who experienced stigma, discrimination, and family rejection that hindered access to ART and retention in care. The group was formed to advocate for and promote access to quality HIV care and treatment services in Kisumu Central, West, and East Constituencies.

16

First Funders 2016–2018

MOPLS successfully worked with 3 funders LVCT Health, Grant Hub, and UHAI-EASHRI marking a major milestone in its growth and sustainability. This validated MOPLS's community-driven model and opened new pathways for service delivery.

18

CBO Registration 27th September 2018

MOPLS transitioned from a self-help support group to a formally registered Community Based Organization (KSM CENTRAL/WINAM/CBO NO: 0097/018). The organization developed key governance documents: governance manual, HR policy, Board TOR, Safeguarding policies, finance and procurement policy, constitution and organizational profile.

20

Strategic Plan 2020–2022

MOPLS developed its first strategic plan, bringing together key stakeholders to define four priority areas: HIV prevention, capacity building, sexual and reproductive health, and human rights advocacy. The plan guided MOPLS through the COVID-19 recovery period and economic challenges.

25

Strategic Plan II 2025–2027

Following an end-term review (ETR) of the first plan and with support from UHAI-EASHRI, MOPLS launched its second Strategic Plan anchored on four pillars: Quality HIV Services, Advocacy, Economic Empowerment, and Institutional Development. This plan aligns with SDGs and the 95.95.95 HIV treatment targets.

Today & Beyond

MOPLS continues growing its network, operating two Drop-In Centers (DICEs) in Kisumu and Sondu, reporting consistently to the Constituency AIDS Control Committee (CACC), and contributing data to Kenya's national grid advocating tirelessly for a healthy, stigma-free community.

Why MOPLS Exists

Due to stigma, drugs and substance abuse, most GBMSM+ default from taking ART services affecting viral suppression and creating more barriers towards achieving 95% tested, 95% linked to care, and 95% viral suppression targets.

MOPLS was formed to take proactive steps in engaging beneficiaries on behavior change communication to improve the wellbeing of GBMSM living with HIV, by reducing stigma to enhance access to ART and retention in care.

The organization operates in a challenging environment recovering from COVID-19, punitive legal and policy contexts, and global economic pressures yet continues to grow and serve its community.

What Sets Us Apart

I
First GBMSM+ Support Group in Kisumu County

MOPLS is the first GBMSM+ support group in Kisumu County, established in 2012 by community members living with HIV who saw the need for dedicated advocacy and support.

II
Only GBMSM+ CBO with Support Group in Kisumu County

Ongoing Challenges

Low level of access and adherence to ART due to stigma and discrimination in healthcare settings.

Minimum package gap — unable to offer the full package (ART, HTS, STI screening/treatment); currently only offering referral services for some.

Inadequate funds to sensitize all health facilities about the needs and rights of Key and Vulnerable Communities.

Hostile policy and legal environment at community, national, regional, and global levels.

Low level of safety and security for key and vulnerable population due to discrimination and violence.

Poor economic outcomes among key and vulnerable populations, compounded by high drug and substance abuse.

Breaking the Barriers: Smart Agriculture

Special Project Empowering GBMSM Living with HIV through Smart Agriculture in Peri-Urban & Rural Kisumu County

MOPLS proposes a community-led smart agriculture initiative to improve food security, income generation, treatment adherence, and resilience among Key Populations (KPs) living with HIV in peri-urban and rural areas of Kisumu County. The project responds to growing economic vulnerability, food insecurity, unemployment, and treatment interruption among KPs resulting from funding cuts, poverty, family rejection, social norms, and limited livelihood opportunities.

The project will train 200 GBMSM living with HIV and the broader LGBTIQ+ community on climate-smart and technology-driven agricultural practices, establish 5 demonstration smart farms managed by community members living with HIV, strengthen market access, and promote inclusion in local agribusiness value chains. Through low-cost irrigation systems, digital learning tools, mentorship, and linkage to markets and financial services, the project creates sustainable livelihoods while improving health outcomes and treatment adherence.

What We've Accomplished

First GBMSM+ Support Group in Kisumu County

MOPLS is the first and only GBMSM+ support group in Kisumu County reporting consistently to the Constituency AIDS Control Committee (CACC), contributing data to the national grid and received a compliance certificate as a result.

Successful CBO Registration — September 2018

Transitioned from a self-help support group to a formally registered CBO (KSM CENTRAL/WINAM/CBO NO: 0097/018), ensuring legal standing for funding and operations.

Strengthened Stakeholder Partnerships

Strengthened partnerships through networks including NEPHAK, Transform Health, Kisumu County Domestic Resource Mobilization Network, and Kisumu County Development Trust, plus direct engagements with government and civil society.

15 Beneficiaries Certified in Economic Empowerment

Trained and certified fifteen beneficiaries on economic empowerment in collaboration with the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).

Safe Space Established

Created and maintained a dedicated safe space for GBMSM+ community members a physical office providing a confidential environment for consultations, peer support and services access.

Policy Influencer at County Level

Through consistent CACC reporting, MOPLS has been periodically invited to participate in key policy meetings at the county level including the development of the Kisumu County Strategic Plan.

Comprehensive Governance Policies Developed

Successfully developed key organizational policies: governance manual, HR policy, Board TOR, Safeguarding policies, finance and procurement policy, constitution, and organizational profile building a foundation for sustainability.

Sustained Financial Audit

MOPLS has sustained organizational financial audits demonstrating financial accountability and transparency to donors, government, and community stakeholders.

Established Drop-In Centers in Kisumu & Sondu

Operating two DICEs providing STI/HIV testing, prevention resources (condoms, PrEP), and HIV educational materials to key populations across Kisumu Central and Sondu.

Strong Referral Network for GBMSM+

Developed strong referral networks for GBMSM+ who need care and support, connecting them to appropriate health facilities and services in a timely and confidential manner.

UHAI-EASHRI Funded Project

Successfully implemented a project supported by UHAI-EASHRI aimed at enhancing better health outcomes and meaningful engagement of GBMSM/MSW living with HIV also supporting review of the Strategic Plan.

What We've Learned

  • Awareness creation through public gatherings and peer education is a powerful tool in reducing stigma leading to lower defaulting rates, easier defaulter tracing, and viral suppression achievement.

  • Targeted sensitization of link health facilities and partners on what MOPLS does and the needs/rights of Key and Vulnerable Communities is essential.

  • Continuous mentorship and empowerment support programmes are required to promote organizational systems strengthening for both MOPLS and its beneficiaries.

  • Partnering with other organizations is more beneficial for leverage of resources and avoids duplication of efforts in the community.

  • Better structures and systems improve communication and organizational effectiveness enabling more people-centered service delivery.
